Helvécio Gomes de Oliveira SDB (born February 19, 1876 in Anchieta , † April 25, 1960 in Mariana , Minas Gerais , Brazil ) was a Brazilian religious and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Mariana .

Life

The son of José Gomes de Oliveira and Maria Mattos de Oliveira studied together with his brother Emanuel Gomes de Oliveira in the Salesian College of Santa Rosa in Niterói , then from 1888 in Turin and at the Gregoriana in Rome. After joining the order of the Salesians of Don Bosco , he was ordained a priest on June 9, 1901. Back at home he tried to evangelize the Indians in Mato Grosso . From 1903 he taught as a professor of theology in São Paulo .

On February 15, 1918 he was by Pope Benedict XV. appointed Bishop of Corumbá . On June 15 of the same year he was appointed Bishop of Maranhão . The episcopal ordination received his Archbishop Angelo Giacinto Scapardini , Apostolic Nuncio in Brazil, on August 15, 1918 Co- consecrators were João Batista Corrêa Néri , Bishop of Campinas , and Benedito Paulo Alves de Souza , Bishop of Espírito Santo .

With the elevation of the diocese of Maranhão to the archbishopric on December 2, 1921, he became its first archbishop. On February 10, 1922 he was from Pius XI. even before his enthronement as Pope, he was appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of Mariana and Titular Archbishop of Verissa . With the death of Archbishop Silvério Gomes Pimentas on November 10, 1922, he succeeded him as Archbishop of Mariana.
