Emanuel Gomes de Oliveira

Emanuel Gomes de Oliveira SDB (born January 9, 1874 in Anchieta (Espírito Santo) , † May 12, 1955 ) was a Brazilian religious and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Goiás .

Life

After he and his brother Helvécio Gomes de Oliveira were orphans, they came into the care of their uncle. This first sent him to the Jesuit college in the ITU in São Paulo . Together with his brother he then attended the Santa Rosa College in Niterói . After he had entered the religious community of the Salesians of Don Bosco - like his brother a little later - and had completed his theological and philosophical studies, he was ordained priest on June 16, 1901 - one week after his brother .

On October 27, 1922, Pope Benedict XV appointed him . the seventh bishop of Goiás - his younger brother had become bishop four years earlier. The Apostolic Nuncio in Brazil, Archbishop Enrico Gasparri , donated him episcopal ordination on April 15 of the following year. Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Belo Horizonte , Antônio dos Santos Cabral , and the Bishop of Espírito Santo , Benedito Paulo Alves de Souza . When on November 18, 1932 the diocese by Pope Pius XI. was raised to the archbishopric, he was also appointed its archbishop. Overall, he led and shaped the diocese for over thirty-two years. He is considered a great builder of churches and schools - the latter especially in Goiânia . He also inspired the establishment of the Pontifical Catholic University of Goiás .

His body was buried in the Goiânia Cathedral, which is still under construction.
