The Diocese of Goiás ( lat. : Dioecesis Goiasensis , port. : Diocese de Goiás ) is in Brazil located Roman Catholic diocese based in Goiás Velho in the state of Goiás .

history

The diocese of Goiás was established on December 6, 1745 by Pope Benedict XIV with the Apostolic Constitution Candor lucis aeternae from cedings of territory from the diocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro as Goiás territorial prelature . On July 15, 1826 the territorial prelature of Goiás was by Pope Leo XII. with the Apostolic Constitution Sollicita Catholici gregis raised to the diocese. The Territorial Prelature of Goiás was subordinated to the Archdiocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro as a suffragan on April 27, 1896 . On May 1, 1906, the Goiás diocese was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Mariana as a suffragan. The Diocese of Goiás gave up parts of its territory on September 29, 1907 to establish the Diocese of Uberaba . Further territories were ceded on December 20, 1915 to found the diocese of Porto Nacional , on July 25, 1924 to found the São José do Alto Tocantins territorial prelature and on June 21, 1929 to found the Jataí territorial prelature .

On November 18, 1932, the Diocese of Goiás was by Pope Pius XI. with the Apostolic Constitution Quae in faciliorem raised to the archbishopric. The Archdiocese of Goiás gave up on March 26, 1956 parts of its territory to establish the Territorial Prelature Formosa , the Archdiocese of Goiânia and the Diocese of Uruaçu . In addition, parts of the territory of the dissolved Territorial Prelature Bananal were incorporated into the Diocese of Goiás .

On March 26, 1956, the Archdiocese of Goiás was by Pope Pius XII. downgraded to a diocese with the Apostolic Constitution Quo Gaudio and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Goiânia as a suffragan. The Diocese of Goiás gave up on November 25, 1961 parts of its territory to establish the territorial prelature of São Luís de Montes Belos . Another assignment of territory took place on October 11, 1966 to establish the Territorial Prelature Rubiataba .
