history

The Diocese of Formosa was on March 26, 1956 by Pope Pius XII. Erected from territory ceded by the Archdiocese of Goiás as the Territorial Prelature Formosa . On October 16, 1979, the territorial prelature was raised to the diocese.

José Ronaldo Ribeiro has been Bishop of Formosa since 2014 . On March 21, 2018, Pope Francis appointed the Archbishop of Uberaba , Paulo Mendes Peixoto , as Apostolic Administrator sede plena , thereby suspending the jurisdiction of the diocesan bishop. The bishop, four priests from his diocese and eight other people have been arrested on suspicion of misappropriating donations. On September 12, 2018, the Pope accepted Ribeiro's resignation and confirmed Archbishop Mendes Peixoto as Apostolic Administrator for the period of the Sedis vacancy.
