Cláudio José Gonçalves Ponce de Leão CM (born February 21, 1841 in Salvador , Bahia , Brazil , † May 27, 1924 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Brazilian religious and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Porto Alegre .

Life

Cláudio José Gonçalves Ponce de Leão joined the religious order of the Lazarists . It was on December 22, 1866. Deacon ordained and received on 15 June 1867, the sacrament of Holy Orders . Then Gonçalves taught Ponce de Leão at the seminary of Ceará and from 1875 at the São José seminary in Rio de Janeiro.

On March 5, 1881, Emperor Peter II of Brazil presented him as Bishop of Goiás . After Pope Leo XIII. had confirmed this appointment on May 13, 1881, on July 24 of the same year the Internuntius in Brazil, Archbishop Angelo Di Pietro , donated him episcopal ordination ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro , Pedro Maria de Lacerda , and the Bishop of Mariana , Antônio Maria Corrêa de Sá e Benevides .

On June 26, 1890 Leo XIII appointed him. Bishop of São Pedro do Rio Grande do Sul (later the diocese of Porto Alegre). Cláudio José Gonçalves Ponce de Leão was due to the elevation of the diocese to Porto Alegre on August 15, 1910 Archdiocese first archbishop of Porto Alegre.

Pope Pius X accepted on January 9, 1912 the resignation put forward by Gonçalves Ponce de Leão and appointed him titular Archbishop of Anazarbus .
