Joaquim Cardinal Arcoverde

Joaquim Cardinal Arcoverde de Albuquerque Cavalcanti (born January 17, 1850 in Cimbres , Brazil , † April 18, 1930 in Rio de Janeiro ) was Archbishop of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro . He was the first cardinal of Brazil and Latin America .

Life

Joaquim Arcoverde de Albuquerque Cavalcanti studied natural sciences , Catholic theology and philosophy in Rome and Paris . He received his doctorate in both philosophy and theology in Catholic and received on 4 April 1874, the sacrament of Holy Orders . After further studies in Paris, he headed the seminary of Olinda from 1876 to 1878 . He then worked as a parish chaplain and teacher for several years.

In 1888 he was appointed coadjutor bishop of São Salvador da Bahia , but refused, so the appointment was withdrawn. On June 26, 1890 Pope Leo XIII appointed him . to the bishop of Goiás . The episcopal ordination received his Cardinal Secretary of State Mariano Rampolla on 26 October 1890; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of São Salvador da Bahia, Antônio de Macedo Costa , and Cardinal Domenico Ferrata .

After renouncing the Goiás diocese on October 27, 1891, he was appointed titular bishop of Argos and coadjutor bishop of São Paulo on August 26, 1892 . On August 19, 1894, he succeeded the late Lino Deodato Rodrigues de Carvalho as Bishop of São Paulo. The inauguration took place on September 30th of the same year.

On August 31, 1897, Pope Leo XIII appointed him . to the Archbishop of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro.

Pope Pius X accepted Joaquim Arcoverde de Albuquerque Cavalcanti on December 11, 1905 as a cardinal priest with the titular church Santi Bonifacio ed Alessio in the college of cardinals . He was the first cardinal of Brazil and Latin America. Because of health problems he was more and more dependent from 1921 on the support of his coadjutor Sebastião Leme da Silveira Cintra , who was to become his successor after his death.

He died on April 18, 1930 in Rio de Janeiro and was buried in the metropolitan basilica there.
