Pesqueira , officially Município de Pesqueira , is a city ( município ) in the Brazilian state of Pernambuco with an estimated 67,395 inhabitants (2019) on 980.875 km².
The history of the city goes back to the 17th century. At the end of 1659 or beginning of 1660, Father João Duarte do Sacramento established a mission station of the Congregation Oratory for the Cariri . The city was founded in 1762 under the name Cimbres . In 1918 Pesqueira became the seat of the diocese of the same name .
The Município, located in the caatinga of the northeastern Brazilian Sertão , is traversed by the Rio Ipanema and the Rio Ipojuca .
The Xucuru ethnic group is settled in 24 villages ( aldeias ) with around 9,000 people in the municipality .
