Antônio de Macedo Costa (born August 7, 1830 in Maragogipe , Bahia , Brazil , † March 20, 1891 ) was a Brazilian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of São Salvador da Bahia .

Life

Antônio de Macedo Costa entered the seminary of Bahia in 1848 . He studied Catholic theology in Bourges from 1852 to 1854 and at the St. Sulpice Seminary in Paris from 1854 to 1857 . On June 6, 1857, he became a deacon ordained, and on 19 December the same year he received by the Archbishop of Paris , François-Nicolas-Madeleine Cardinal Morlot , the sacrament of Holy Orders . On June 28, 1859 Antônio de Macedo Costa was at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome in the subject canon law doctorate .

On September 28, 1860, Emperor Peter II of Brazil presented him as Bishop of Belém do Pará . After Pope Pius IX. had confirmed this appointment on December 17, 1860, donated him on April 21, 1861 the Internuntius in Brazil, Archbishop Mariano Falcinelli Antoniacci OSB , the episcopal ordination . The inauguration took place on May 28, 1861.

On June 26, 1890 Pope Leo XIII appointed him . to the Archbishop of São Salvador da Bahia (and thus Primate of Brazil).

Antônio de Macedo Costa attended the First Vatican Council as a council father .
