Luís Antônio dos Santos

Luís Antônio dos Santos (born March 1, 1817 in Angra dos Reis , State of Rio de Janeiro , Brazil ; † March 11, 1891 in Salvador , Bahia ) was a Brazilian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of São Salvador da Bahia .

Life

Luís Antônio dos Santos was ordained a deacon on August 24, 1841 and received the sacrament of ordination for the diocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro on September 21 of the same year . Subsequently, Luís Antônio dos Santos specialized in canon law in Rome .

On September 28, 1860 Pope Pius IX appointed him . to the first bishop of Ceará . The Bishop of Mariana , Antônio Ferreira Viçoso CM , gave him on April 14, 1861 in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption in Mariana the episcopal ordination .

On May 13, 1881 Pope Leo XIII appointed him . to the Archbishop of São Salvador da Bahia. Leo XIII. accepted on May 17, 1890 the resignation presented by Luís Antônio dos Santos and appointed him on June 26 of the same year titular Archbishop of Chalcis in Syria .

Luís Antônio dos Santos took part in the First Vatican Council as a council father .

He was a knight of the Brazilian Order of Christ and an officer of the Order of the Rose .
