The Cathedral of Mariana or the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption ( Portuguese: Catedral Basilica Nossa Senhora da Assunção ) or Catedral da Sé is a Roman Catholic church in Mariana , one of the oldest cities in Brazil in the state of Minas Gerais . The cathedral of the Archdiocese of Mariana with the patronage of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is consecrated to the Virgin Mary and also has the title of a minor basilica .

history

Today's parish of the Assumption of Mary was founded in 1704 and was consecrated to the Virgin of Carmen at that time. The Portuguese miner António Pereira Machado built an adobe building as a chapel. With the appointment of the settlement to the city of Mariana by Governor Antonio de Albuquerque, the construction of a permanent church on today's Praça da Sé began in 1711 . A first expansion took place between 1713 and 1718 and was entrusted to the builder Jacinto Barbosa Lopes, who reused the existing structure and rebuilt the sacristy. In 1734 the building was already upgraded with the start of new work on the facade and towers under the responsibility of António Coelho Fonseca. The construction of the sacrament chapel and the plastering were carried out between 1751 and 1761. In the same year, the ceiling painting of the central nave and the chancel and the two domes were completed. Furthermore, the gilding of the side altars was carried out by Manuel Rabelo de Sousa, after which the church was initially completed. In 1798, the outer walls were rebuilt in stone and lime due to decay.

In the meantime, in 1745, with the creation of the Mariana diocese, the church became the Cathedral of the Assumption. Pope John XXIII awarded the protected architectural monument . 1963 also the title of a minor basilica .

architecture

The three-aisled church with narrow aisles was built in the Mannerist style. The sober double tower facade frames a triangular gable between the two bell towers. The main nave, which is separated from the side aisles by rows of square columns, is covered with a barrel vault with the ceiling painting. The lower chancel with the painted high altar is connected to the nave, divided by an arch. To the side of the chancel and at the ends of both transepts, further altars have been set up, the styles of which range from the Baroque to the Rococo .

Behind the cathedral is the Diocesan Museum .

organ

Schnitger organ

The organ comes from Arp Schnitger and is his only surviving outside of Europe. The seven 7 meter high and 5 meter wide organ was manufactured in Hamburg around 1701 and initially installed in Lisbon . In 1752 it was acquired by King John V , transferred to Mariana and installed there on a new gallery above the entrance area. 14 of the 18 registers are still completely or partially preserved. The organ was restored in two phases until 1984 and 2002. In addition to the liturgical accompaniment, it is used for regular organ concerts.
