João Fernando Santiago Esberard (born October 10, 1843 in Barcelona , † January 22, 1897 in Rio de Janeiro ) was Archbishop of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro .

Life

João Esberard, son of a Belgian father and a Spanish mother, studied from 1864 at the São José seminary in Rio de Janeiro, where his family emigrated shortly after his birth. He was ordained a priest on August 24, 1869 and was a teacher at the seminary of Rio from 1870.

Pope Leo XIII. appointed him on June 26, 1890 titular bishop of Geras and coadjutor bishop of Olinda . He was ordained episcopate on September 28 of the same year by Pedro Maria de Lacerda , Bishop of Rio de Janeiro. On May 12, 1891 Esberard succeeded José Pereira da Silva Barros , who was also Bishop of Rio de Janeiro, the new Bishop of Olinda. On September 12, 1893 Pope Leo XIII appointed him. as Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro, which was raised in the previous year.

João Esberard died of arteriosclerosis in January 1897 and was buried in the chapel of the Episcopal Palace in Rio.
