The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Olinda e Recife ( Latin Archidioecesis Olindensis et Recifensis , Portuguese Arquidiocese de Olinda e Recife ) is a in Brazil located Roman Catholic Archdiocese based in Olinda in the state of Pernambuco .

history

The Archdiocese of Olinda e Recife was established on July 15, 1614 by Pope Paul V with the Apostolic Constitution Fasti novi orbis from territory ceded by the Diocese of São Salvador da Bahia as the territorial prelature of Pernambuco . On July 6, 1624, the territorial prelature of Pernambuco was subordinated to the Archdiocese of São Salvador da Bahia as a suffragan by Pope Urban VIII with the Apostolic Constitution Romanus Pontifex .

The territorial prelature of Pernambuco was on November 16, 1676 by Pope Innocent XI. with the Apostolic Constitution Ad sacram Beati Petri sedem raised to the diocese and renamed the Diocese of Olinda . The Diocese of Olinda gave on June 6, 1854 parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Ceará . On December 5, 1910, the Diocese of Olinda was raised to an archdiocese by Pope Pius X. The Archdiocese of Olinda was on July 26, 1918 by Pope Benedict XV. renamed with the Apostolic Constitution Cum urbs Recife in the Archdiocese of Olinda e Recife . On August 2, 1918, the Archdiocese of Olinda e Recife gave up parts of its territory to establish the dioceses of Garanhuns and Nazaré . Further territorial assignments took place on August 7, 1948 to found the Caruaru diocese and on January 13, 1962 to found the Palmares diocese .
