The Archdiocese of Teresina ( Latin Archidioecesis Teresiana , Portuguese Arquidiocese de Teresina ) is a Roman Catholic diocese based in Teresina in the Brazilian state of Piauí .

history

Originally the diocese was separated from the diocese of São Luís do Maranhão in 1902 as the diocese of Piauí . In 1920 areas were assigned to the newly established territorial prelature Bom Jesus do Piauí . In the course of the establishment of the Teresina diocese in December 1944, two further dioceses emerged from the diocesan area with the dioceses of Oeiras and Parnaíba . On August 9, 1952, the diocese was raised to the Archdiocese of Teresina. The last assignments of territory to the new dioceses of Picos and Campo Maior took place in the 1970s .
