Avelar Cardinal Brandão Vilela (born June 13, 1912 in Visosa , Brazil , † December 19, 1986 in Salvador da Bahia ) was a Brazilian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of São Salvador da Bahia .

Life

Avelar Brandão Vilela received his theological and philosophical training in the seminaries of Maceió and Olinda . He received the sacrament of ordination for the diocese of Aracaju on October 27, 1935 and then worked as a lecturer and spiritual advisor in the formation of priests. In addition, he was the secretary and chaplain of Catholic Action .

Pope Pius XII appointed him Bishop of Petrolina on June 13, 1946 . He was ordained episcopal on October 27th of the same year by the Bishop of Aracaju, José Tomas Gomes da Silva . Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Pesqueira , Adalberto Accioli Sobral , and the Archbishop of Belém do Pará , Mário de Miranda Vilas-Boas .

On November 5, 1955, Pope Pius XII appointed him. to the Archbishop of Teresina . Avelar Brandão Vilela took part in all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council as a council father from 1962 to 1965 . Pope Paul VI transferred to him on March 25, 1971 the leadership of the Archdiocese of São Salvador da Bahia and took him on March 5, 1973 as a cardinal priest with the titular church Santi Bonifacio ed Alessio in the cardinals college. On October 25, 1980, Pope John Paul II added the rank of " Primate of Brazil" to the bishopric of São Salvador da Bahia and Avelar Cardinal Brandão Vilela became the first holder of this title. He died on December 19, 1986 in São Salvador da Bahia and was buried in the Cathedral of Salvador .
