José Cardinal Freire Falcão (born October 23, 1925 in Ererê , Brazil ) is a Brazilian Roman Catholic clergyman and emeritus Archbishop of Brasília .

Life

José Freire Falcão studied from 1938 at the seminary of Prainha Catholic theology and received on 19 June 1949, the sacrament of the priesthood for the Diocese of Limoeiro do Norte . He then worked until 1967 as a parish chaplain, teacher and pastor of the Catholic Action .

On April 24, 1967, Pope Paul VI appointed him . the titular bishop of Vardimissa and Coadjutor Bishop of Limoeiro do Norte. The Archbishop of Fortaleza , José de Medeiros Delgado , donated him episcopal ordination on June 17th of the same year. Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Crato , Vicente de Paulo Araújo Matos , and the Bishop of Iguatu , José Mauro Ramalho de Alarcón Santiago . With the death of Aureliano de Matos on August 19, 1967, he succeeded him as Bishop of Limoeiro do Norte.

On November 25, 1971, he was appointed Archbishop of Teresina . Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Brasília on February 15, 1984 . He was Vice President of the Latin American Bishops Council CELAM.

José Freire Falcão has been a member of the College of Cardinals since June 28, 1988 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Luca a Via Prenestina . He was a member of the Council of Cardinals for the study of organizational and economic problems of the Holy See.

On January 28, 2004, he laid down the leadership of the Archdiocese of Brasília for reasons of age. Almost six months before his 80th year of life and the associated loss of the active papal suffrage, he took part in the 2005 conclave , in which Benedict XVI. was elected to succeed John Paul II and was the fourth eldest papal voter. At the 2013 conclave after the resignation of Benedict XVI. he no longer took part because he had exceeded the age limit.
