José de Medeiros Delgado (born July 28, 1905 in Pombal , Paraíba , † March 9, 1988 in Recife ) was Archbishop of Fortaleza .

Life

José de Medeiros Delgado entered the João Pessoa seminary in 1918 , continued his theology and philosophy studies in Rome from 1924 and was ordained a priest on June 2, 1929 .

Pope Pius XII appointed him on March 15, 1941 first bishop of the diocese of Caicó established in November 1939 . The episcopal ordination donated to him on June 29th of the same year Moisés Sizenando Coelho , Archbishop of Paraíba . Co- consecrators were João da Matha de Andrade e Amaral , Bishop of Amazonas , and Marcolino Esmeraldo de Souza Dantas , Bishop of Natal . On September 4, 1951, Pius XII appointed Medeiros to the Archbishop of São Luís do Maranhão . From 1962 to 1965 he took part in the Second Vatican Council .

Pope John XXIII appointed him on May 10, 1963 Archbishop of Fortaleza. Medeiros' most important achievements there included the reconstruction of the cathedral and the reopening of the regional seminary. Pope Paul VI accepted his early resignation on March 26, 1973.

José de Medeiros Delgado then moved to Recife. He died there in 1988 at the age of 82 and was buried in Caicó Cathedral.
