Jorge Arturo Cardinal Medina Estévez (born December 23, 1926 in Santiago de Chile , Chile ) is Bishop Emeritus of Valparaíso and Cardinal Emeritus of the Roman Catholic Church .

life and career

Jorge Arturo Medina Estévez studied Catholic theology , literature and biology at the Pontifical Catholic University in Santiago . He holds a degree in biology and a doctorate in both theology and canon law . On June 12, 1954, he received the sacrament of ordination and then worked as a parish chaplain and was appointed as a university teacher . From 1962 to 1965 he participated as an expert at the Second Vatican Council . From 1965 to 1984 he worked as a judge at the diocesan court and in the direction of the Catholic University of Santiago . He also acted as an advisor to various departments of the Vatican .

December 18, 1984 appointed him Pope John Paul II. To the titular of Thibilis and auxiliary bishop in Rancagua . The Pope ordained him episcopal on January 6, 1985 in St. Peter's Basilica .

On November 25, 1987, he became Bishop of Rancagua . From 1993 to 1996 he headed the Diocese of Valparaíso .

In 1996 he became pro- prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Order of the Sacraments . On February 21, 1998, Pope John Paul II accepted him as a cardinal deacon with the title deaconry of San Saba in the college of cardinals , and two days later appointed him prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship. Jorge Medina chaired several Synods of Bishops and represented the Pope on various occasions abroad.

On January 26, 1999, for the first time in 385 years, the Congregation under Medina's direction issued new regulations on exorcism . An 84-page Vatican manual on exorcising the devil "De Exorcismis et Supplicationibus Quibusdam" replaced the instructions from 1614 that had been valid at that time .

On October 1, 2002, the Pope accepted his age-related resignation as prefect of the Congregation for the Sacraments. From February 24, 2005 to February 23, 2007 he was cardinal protodeacon . With this office, after the 2005 conclave, he was given the task of announcing the election of Joseph Ratzinger as Pope to the public and throwing the pallium on him during the inauguration ceremony.

On March 1, 2008, Jorge Medina was elevated to cardinal priest pro hac vice . In 2011, his response to the sexual abuse perpetrated by the Catholic priest Fernando Karadima, his former student, sparked opposition and outrage in Chile. In an interview, Medina had described his crimes as a result of homosexuality and "human weakness" and questioned that a 17-year-old was a victim of sexual abuse, because "a 17-year-old knows what he is doing". He did not take part in the 2013 conclave because he had exceeded the age limit of 80 years.

Political positions

Medina has been criticized for its proximity to the then dictator Pinochet . The imprisonment of Pinochet, who is held responsible for the murder of more than 3,000 people, in England has been described by Medina as the humiliation of Chile . In 1997, the Chilean foreign minister criticized Medina, who had spoken out against the suspension of Pinochet as senator for life, as interference by the church in state affairs. Medina was also critical of democracy: the fact that there is democracy does not automatically mean that God wants democracy to be practiced.

After a gay father was granted custody of his sons in early 2009, he announced that homosexuals practicing Paul would not look to the kingdom of God and he therefore believed that people in this situation would not be able to raise others, especially no children . “When the children are Christians and reject this homosexual coexistence, a tension arises that is not beneficial. If the children finally accept this situation, it means that they agree to something immoral. ”The Federación Chilena de la Diversidad Sexual sharply criticized these statements.

In 2004 Medina opposed the erection of an altar by the Basque sculptor Chillidas in the Jesuit church St. Peter in Cologne. The tripartite division of the altar does not meet the requirements of the church institution.
