After priestly ordination on 16 July 1961 he earned a postgraduate degree at the University of Friborg (Switzerland) , the licentiate in theology.

He then worked as a chaplain for students and clergy of the Schoenstatt Movement and as regional superior of the priestly community in Chile. In 1971 he was appointed to Germany as a member of the general government of the Schoenstatt Fathers . From 1974 to 1980 he was Superior General of the Schoenstatt Fathers, and since 1979 Chairman of the General Presidium of the Schoenstatt Movement.

On 22 December 1990. Pope appointed him John Paul II. To Titular Archbishop of Hólar and secretary of the Congregation for Religious . From 1996 to 1998 Errázuriz Ossa was Bishop of the Diocese of Valparaíso with the personal title of Archbishop. On April 25, 1998 he was appointed Archbishop of Santiago de Chile. He was President of the Chilean Bishops 'Conference and from 2003 to 2007 President of the Latin American Bishops' Conference CELAM .

On February 21, 2001 John Paul II accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria della Pace in the college of cardinals .

Pope Benedict XVI On December 15, 2010, he accepted his resignation due to reasons of age. After his resignation, Cardinal Errázuriz took part in the 2013 conclave .

With the task of advising the Pope in the direction of the universal Church and preparing changes to the Apostolic Constitution Pastor Bonus , which regulates the organization of the Curia , Pope Francis appointed him in April 2013 as a member of the Council of Cardinals , a group of nine cardinals who have the Pope in mind should advise on the reform of the Curia.

In September 2018, Chilean investigative authorities secured emails from the incumbent Archbishop of Santiago de Chile, Ricardo Ezzati Andrello SDB , Francisco Javier Errázuriz Ossa, and the Auxiliary Bishop of Santiago, Luis Fernando Ramos Pérez, in connection with allegations of cover-up of cases of sexual abuse . Victims of abuse accuse Errázuriz of preventing the prosecution of a clergyman later convicted of abuse for years as Archbishop of Santiago de Chile from 1998 to 2010. Three victims reported Errázuriz at the end of October 2018 for perjury and false testimony. Previously, a letter from February 2009 had become known in which Errázuriz had admitted to the then nuncio in Chile, Giuseppe Pinto , that as archbishop he had stopped the investigations against the influential abuser Fernando Karadima , convicted in 2011 , while he had later sworn under oath that he had advanced the investigation to the best of his knowledge.

At the end of October 2018, Pope Francis dismissed Errázuriz, Laurent Monsengwo Pasinya and George Pell from the Council of Cardinals.
