Laurent Monsengwo Pasinya
Laurent Cardinal Monsengwo Pasinya (born October 7, 1939 in Mongobele , Democratic Republic of the Congo ) is a Congolese Roman Catholic clergyman. He was Archbishop of Kinshasa from December 6, 2007 to November 1, 2018 .
Life
Laurent Monsengwo Pasinya comes from a family that belonged to the royal families of the Basakata tribe . The family name "Monsengwo" means "grandson of the traditional chief".
From 1946 to 1951 he attended primary school in Nioki . In 1951, Monsengwo Pasinya entered the seminary in Bokoro . Laurent Monsengwo Pasinya studied philosophy at the seminary of the Archdiocese of Kananga from 1957 to 1960 . In 1960 he was sent to Rome to the Collegio Urbano de Propaganda Fide . Monsengwo Pasinya studied Catholic theology at the Pontifical Urban University . Laurent Monsengwo Pasinya received the sacrament of ordination for the diocese of Inongo on December 21, 1963 in Rome through the Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples , Cardinal Grégoire-Pierre Agagianian . In 1964, Monsengwo Pasinya obtained a degree in Catholic theology from the Pontifical Urban University . From 1964 to 1970 he studied Biblical Exegesis at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome. In 1968 he completed a semester at the Jerusalem branch of the Pontifical Biblical Institute. During this time Monsengwo Pasinya learned Modern Hebrew . Laurent Monsengwo Pasinya received his doctorate in theology in 1970 at the Pontifical Biblical Institute with an exegetical dissertation entitled “La notion de 'Nomos' dans le Pentateuque grec” (“The term ' Nomos ' in the Greek Pentateuch ”) . He was the first African to receive a doctorate in Biblical Exegesis.
From 1970 to 1971, Laurent Monsengwo Pasinya was a lecturer in the theological faculty of Lovanium University and professor of biblical exegesis at the seminary of John XXIII. in Kinshasa . From 1971 to 1972 he was Professor of Exegesis of the Old Testament , Hebrew , and Biblical Theology of the Old Testament at the University of Zaire . Monsengwo Pasinya was a professor at the Kinshasa Faculty of Theology from 1972 to 1980. In addition, from 1972 to 1975 he was assistant general secretary of the Bishops' Conference of Zaire. In 1976 Laurent Monsengwo Pasinya co-founded the Journées Bibliques Africaines (JBA). From 1976 to 1980 Laurent Monsengwo Pasinya was general secretary of the Bishops' Conference of Zaire.
On 13 February 1980 Pope appointed him John Paul II. To the titular of Aquae Novae in Proconsulari and ordered him to auxiliary bishop in Inongo. He was ordained bishop by Pope John Paul II on May 4th of the same year in the Notre Dame du Congo Cathedral in Kinshasa; Co- consecrators were the Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples , Cardinal Agnelo Rossi , and the Archbishop of Kinshasa, Cardinal Joseph-Albert Malula . On April 7, 1981 Laurent Monsengwo Pasinya was appointed auxiliary bishop in Kisangani by John Paul II . John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Kisangani on September 1, 1988. On December 6, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . to the Archbishop of Kinshasa. The inauguration took place on February 2, 2008.
In the consistory of November 20, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI took him. as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria "Regina Pacis" in Ostia mare in the college of cardinals .
On June 30, 2012, Benedict XVI called him. together with the Bishop of Hong Kong , John Cardinal Tong Hon , and the Archbishop of Guadalajara , Francisco Cardinal Robles Ortega , as Delegate President of the XIII. General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops (7th to 28th October 2012).
With the task of advising the Pope in the direction of the universal Church and preparing changes to the Apostolic Constitution Pastor Bonus , which regulates the organization of the Curia , Pope Francis made him a member of the Cardinals Council , a group of eight cardinals who the Pope with regard to intended to advise on the reform of the Curia.
Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation from the office of Archbishop of Kinshasa on November 1, 2018; Fridolin Ambongo Besungu became his successor. On December 12, 2018, it was announced that Pope Francis had released Pasinya at the end of October 2018 from his duties in the Council of Cardinals, of which he was the only African cardinal to belong. Recently he had only attended the meetings irregularly.
