John Cardinal Tong Hon ( Chinese  湯 漢 ; born July 31, 1939 in Hong Kong ) is a Chinese clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic Bishop of Hong Kong .

Life

John Tong Hon holds a Masters degree in Philosophy from the Chinese University of Hong Kong . He then studied Catholic theology at the Pontifical Urban University in Rome . Tong Hon received on January 6, 1966 in Rome through Pope Paul VI. the sacrament of ordination . He then returned to Hong Kong and worked at the Holy Spirit Seminary College in Hong Kong.

On 13 September 1996 it appointed Pope John Paul II. To the titular of Bossa and ordered him to auxiliary bishop in Hong Kong. He received his episcopal ordination on December 9, 1996, John Baptist Cardinal Wu Cheng-chung ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Tokyo , Peter Seiichi Cardinal Shirayanagi , and the Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples , Curia Archbishop Charles Asa Schleck CSC . Tong Hon chose the motto Dominus pastor meus (“The Lord is my Shepherd”), which comes from the Book of Psalms ( Ps 23.1  EU ). In 2003 John Tong Hon was appointed Consultor to the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. On January 30, 2008 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . to coadjutor bishop of Hong Kong. On April 15, 2009, John Tong Hon became Bishop of Hong Kong after accepting the resignation of his predecessor, Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-kiun SDB , for reasons of age .

In the solemn consistory of February 18, 2012, Benedict XVI took him. as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria Regina Apostolorum in the College of Cardinals . On April 22, 2012, his titular church in Rome was seized.

On June 30, 2012, Benedict XVI called him. together with the Archbishop of Guadalajara , Francisco Cardinal Robles Ortega , and the Archbishop of Kinshasa , Laurent Cardinal Monsengwo Pasinya , as delegated President of the XIII. General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops (7th to 28th October 2012).

Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on August 1, 2017. After the death of his successor Michael Yeung Ming-cheung Pope Francis appointed him on January 5, 2019 the period of Vacant See the Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Hong Kong.
