Michael Yeung Ming-cheung ( Chinese  楊 鳴 章 ; * December 1, 1945 in Shanghai ; † January 3, 2019 in Central and Western District , Hong Kong ) was a Chinese clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Hong Kong .

Life

Michael Yeung Ming-cheung was born in Shanghai to a Catholic family and came to Hong Kong when he was four. After completing his schooling, he first worked for an import-export company in Hong Kong and entered the Hong Kong seminary at the age of 26. After studying philosophy and theology, Michael Yeung Ming-cheung received the sacrament of ordination on June 10, 1978 . After pastoral work, he completed a communication course (Syracuse, USA) as well as philosophy and education (Harvard, USA). In 2003 he became head of Caritas Hong Kong. In 2009 he became vicar general of his home diocese.

On 11 July 2014 it appointed Pope Francis to the titular bishop of Mons in Numidia and ordered him to auxiliary bishop in Hong Kong. The Bishop of Hong Kong, John Tong Hon Cardinal , gave him as well as Stephen Lee Sang Bun and Joseph Ha Chi-shing OFM on 30 August of the same year, the episcopal ordination ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop Emeritus of Hong Kong, Joseph Cardinal Zen Ze-kiun SDB , and the Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples , Curia Archbishop Savio Hon Tai-Fai SDB.

Pope Francis appointed him Coadjutor Bishop of Hong Kong on November 13, 2016 . With the age-related resignation of Cardinal Tong Hon, he succeeded him on August 1, 2017 as Bishop of Hong Kong.
