Caritas Internationalis

Caritas Internationalis is the umbrella organization of the 165 national Caritas associations. These charities of the Roman Catholic Church are active in more than 200 countries in emergency aid , development aid and social services. Members of Caritas Internationalis include the German Caritas Association , Caritas Austria , Caritas Switzerland and the French Secours catholique .

In 1951 the confederation was set up in its now existing structural form with already 13 member organizations. In 1957 it was named Caritas Internationalis . Caritas Internationalis is part of the Catholic Church, but helps everyone regardless of their creed .

Since 2019, the dicastery for holistic human development has been officially responsible for Caritas Internationalis following the reorganization. The State Secretariat of the Vatican oversees the statutes and ordinances as well as the financial agreements with governments, non-governmental organizations and international bodies.

Caritas Internationalis is based in Vatican City and has representations at the United Nations in New York City , Geneva , Rome and Paris . The Caritas network consists of seven regions worldwide: Africa , Asia , Europe , Latin America / Caribbean , Middle East / North Africa , North America and Oceania .

  • 2007–2015: Cardinal Óscar Rodríguez Maradiaga from Honduras. Lesley-Anne Knight from Great Britain was elected Secretary General in 2007 to succeed Duncan MacLaren ; she was followed by Michel Roy in 2011 .
  • 2015–2019: The General Assembly in May 2015 elected Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle , Archbishop of Manila, as President of Caritas Internationalis. Michael Roy was elected as Secretary General of Caritas Internationalis.
  • since 2019: The General Assembly in May 2019 re-elected Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Archbishop of Manila, as President of Caritas Internationalis. Aloysius John , born in France, was elected as Secretary General of Caritas Internationalis .
