Karl Johannes "Carlo" Bayer (born February 13, 1915 in Obernigk , Trebnitz district , † January 16, 1977 in Rome ) was a pioneer of Caritas Internationalis .

Life

Bayer studied Catholic theology at the University of Breslau and from 1934 as an alumne of the Germanicum at the Pontifical University in Rome . There he was ordained a priest on October 27, 1940 and, after joining the Wehrmacht , became an interpreter for the Air Force . After the end of the war he looked after German prisoners of war in Italy as an employee of the Commissione di Assistenza . In the holy year 1950 he headed the German pilgrims office in Rome. From 1951 to 1970 Bayer was Secretary General of Caritas Internationalis , the union of national Caritas associations. An important focus of his work was the construction aid for national Caritas organizations in South America and Southeast Europe . Rich in ideas and often unconventionally, Bayer coordinated numerous church aid campaigns. His dedicated work in Biafra aid (1968 to 1970) led to diplomatic quarrels and Bayer's resignation. From 1972 to 1977, on the recommendation of Cardinal Julius Döpfner , Bayer headed the Vienna European Aid Fund with a focus on aid for Eastern Europe.

He died on January 16, 1977 in his Roman apartment and was buried in Campo Santo Teutonico .
