Carl Vath

Carl Hermann Vath (born October 12, 1909 in Niederlahnstein ; † August 18, 1974 in Much-Kranüchel ) was a German merchant and Roman Catholic prelate .

Life

After attending grammar school in Oberlahnstein and Koblenz , Vath completed a commercial apprenticeship in New York . From 1920 he worked as a wholesale merchant in China , especially in Shanghai .

At the age of 39 he entered a Catholic seminary , studied philosophy and theology, and was ordained a priest in 1952 . After his ordination he lived in Hong Kong and worked for the Catholic Center there. He was the editor of two church newspapers, Kung Kao Po and The Sunday Examiner . In 1959 he was the first pastor of the German-speaking Catholic community in Hong Kong. He founded Caritas Hong Kong and was its first director. He initiated the construction of schools, hospitals, kindergartens, old people's homes, refugee apartments and training workshops.

In 1971 he succeeded Jean Rodhain as President of Caritas Internationalis based in Rome.
