history

It was founded on May 1, 1846 as the Apostolic Vicariate of Japan. As early as May 22, 1876, a second vicariate was founded in Japan, so that the new name of the vicariate of Japan was changed to Northern Japan. With the establishment of the Diocese of Nagasaki on June 15, 1891, the Apostolic Vicariate was elevated to an archdiocese . In 1922 and 1937 Tokyo lost again diocesan territory to establish further dioceses; it has been limited to the area of the Japanese prefectures of Tokyo and Chiba since 1937 . Since 1954 there has been a diocese sponsorship between the Archdiocese of Tokyo and the Archdiocese of Cologne , which was initiated by the then Archbishop of Cologne, Joseph Cardinal Frings .
