The Roman Catholic Diocese of Sapporo ( lat. : Dioecesis Sapporensis , jap. カトリック仙台教区 , katorikku Sapporo Kyoku ) is in Japan situated Roman Catholic diocese , based in Sapporo .

history

Pope Benedict XV founded the Apostolic Prefecture Sapporo on February 12, 1915, out of territory from the Diocese of Hakodate . With the Breve Ad animorum it was raised on March 30, 1929 to the Apostolic Vicariate , which was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Tokyo as a suffragan diocese.

On July 18, 1932, it lost part of its territory for the establishment of the Mission sui iuris Karafuto . It was raised to a diocese on December 11, 1952, which was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Tokyo as a suffragan diocese.
