The diocese of Sendai ( lat. : Dioecesis Sendaiensis , Jap. カトリック仙台教区 , katorikku Sendai Kyoku ) is in Japan situated Roman Catholic diocese based in Sendai .
history
Pope Leo XIII. founded the Apostolic Vicariate Hakodate on April 4, 1891, from territory ceded by the Apostolic Vicariate Northern Japan . With the Breve Non maius Nobis it was raised on June 15 of the same year to the diocese, which was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Tokyo as a suffragan diocese.
According to the decree Cum dioecesis of the Congregatio de Propaganda Fide , it moved the episcopal see from Hakodate to Sendai on March 9, 1936 and took on the current name.
It later lost parts of its territory in favor of the establishment of new dioceses:
- August 13, 1912 to the Apostolic Prefecture of Niigata ;
- February 12, 1915 to the Apostolic Prefecture of Sapporo .

The diocese of Sendai includes the prefectures of Aomori , Fukushima , Iwate and Miyagi in the north of the island of Honshu .
