The Congregation for the Evangelization of Nations ( Latin : Congregatio pro Gentium Evangelizatione ) is a central authority of the Roman Curia and coordinates the missionary activity of the Catholic Church .

history

The institution goes back to the Congregatio de Propaganda Fide ("Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith"), which Pope Gregory XV. Founded in 1622 primarily with the aim of counteracting the loss of influence caused by the spread of Protestantism . After the end of the Thirty Years War , the newly established equilibrium between the two Christian churches in Europe offered only very limited opportunities for missionary work, but the discoveries in America, Africa and Asia opened up a wide field of activity for Catholic missionaries.

As part of the Pope Paul VI. The curia reform carried out in 1967 gave it its current name.

structure

The congregation is divided into four thematic commissions:

  1. Commission for theology, spirituality and missionary impulses
  2. Commission for the Revision of Synods and Bishops' Conferences, the Rules of Religious Institutes and Seminars under the Congregation
  3. Pastoral Commission for the Study of Mission Principles
  4. Commission for Catechists and Catechesis.

The Pontifical Urban University is also part of the Congregation. It focuses on the mission training of priests. The in-house printing company "Polyglotta" takes care of the production of missionary writings in the languages ​​of the peoples to be missionized.

As part of the Committee for the Pontifical Mission Societies, the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples is also responsible for the direction and coordination of the four Papal Mission Societies, the Pontifical Work for the Propagation of the Faith , the Work of Saint Peter , the Children's Mission and the Mission Union . The focus is on promoting awareness of mission and the world church as well as securing the financial security of missionary tasks.

On September 21, 2013 the entire leadership of the Congregation was confirmed permanently in office by Pope Francis.

The congregation today consists of 63 members. There are also around 50 permanent employees.

In addition to the prefect, the congregation consists of 35 cardinals, 17 archbishops, a bishop, five national directors of the Pontifical Mission Societies and five superiors, who are each appointed by the Pope for five years. Members of the congregation are currently:
