The Economic Secretariat ( Italian: Segreteria per l'Economia ; Latin : Secretaria Sanctae Sedis rebus oeconomicis praeposita ) is a dicastery of the Roman Curia with authority over all economic activities of the Holy See and the Vatican City . Pope Francis ordered the establishment of the secretariat in the Motu proprio Fidelis dispensator et prudens , published on February 24, 2014. It is headed by a cardinal prefect who reports directly to the Pope. Besides the State Secretariat, it is the second dicastery called Secretariat , an indication of its relative importance compared to other parts of the Curia. The seat of the Secretariat is in the Torre San Giovanni in the Vatican Gardens .

George Pell , then Archbishop of Sydney , was appointed First Prefect of the Secretariat and asked to begin his work as soon as possible . Pell said he would start work at the Vatican in late March 2014. The Pope also announced the formation of a Pontifical Economic Council to set guidelines for the Secretariat and to analyze its work. The council consists of eight cardinals or bishops and seven lay people with strong financial professional experience , chosen so that the council is representative of the worldwide Church. These members were named on March 8, 2014. The council is headed by a cardinal coordinator, currently Reinhard Marx . The Pope will also appoint a general auditor. On March 3, 2014, the Pope appointed Monsignor Alfred Xuereb as the first secretary of the secretariat. On March 22nd, Pope Francis appointed Brian Ferme , a British- born lawyer and director of the St. Pius X Faculty of Canon Law in Venice , as the first prelate secretary to the council to oversee the secretariat.

On February 24, 2019, Cardinal Pell was relieved of his office. On November 14th of the same year Pope Francis appointed the Spanish Jesuit Juan Antonio Guerrero Alves to succeed Pell.

The Secretary General of the Vatican Economic Secretariat has been the Spanish economist Maximino Caballero Ledo since August 4, 2020.
