history

The present Archdiocese of Sydney was founded in 1834 as the Apostolic Vicariate of New Holland and Van Diemen's Land from the Apostolic Vicariate Cape of Good Hope . As early as April 5, 1842, the Vicariates Apostolic Hobart and Adelaide were separated and the Vicariate Apostolic of New Holland and Van Diemen's Land was elevated to the diocese of Sydney. On April 22, 1842, the bishopric of Sydney was raised to an archbishopric with a metropolitan seat.

On May 6, 1845, there were further divisions through the establishment of the Apostolic Vicariates Essington and King George Sounde - The Sound , as well as the establishment of the diocese of Perth . Furthermore, the Archdiocese of Sydney on June 25, 1847 the dioceses Melbourne and Maitland , on April 12, 1859 the diocese Brisbane , on November 17, 1862 the diocese of Goulburn and on June 20, 1865 the diocese Bathurst were founded.

The Archdiocese of Sydney is one of the traditional cardinal seats of the Catholic Church. An auxiliary bishop is at the side of the archbishop to carry out his pastoral duties . The ecclesiastical province now includes the dioceses Armidale , Lismore , Maitland-Newcastle , Wagga Wagga , Wilcannia-Forbes and Wollongong .

On December 11, 2018, the jury of an Australian court found the former local bishop , Curia Cardinal George Pell , unanimously guilty. The charges are officially unknown and, according to media reports, concern the sexual abuse of minors . Pell is free on bail ; the sentence was announced for February 4, 2019. Regarding criminal proceedings , Vatican spokesman Greg Burke said the Holy See has "the greatest respect for the Australian courts". On December 12, 2018, the Vatican announced that Pope Francis had already released Pell and two other cardinals from his duties in the Council of Cardinals in October 2018 because of his old age .
