Archbishop John Bede Polding

Bede Polding , OSB (born October 18, 1794 in Liverpool , England , † March 16, 1877 in Sydney , Australia ) was the first Roman Catholic bishop and Archbishop of Sydney , Australia.

Life

John Polding was born to a Dutch father and a mother, who had come from the Brewer family, who had been Catholic since the 16th century. His family name was also spelled Poulden or Polten. His parents died and at the age of eight he was taken into the care of his uncle, Father Bede Brewer , General President of the English Benedictine Congregation .

Polding was first tutored by the Benedictine Sisters of the Convent of Our Lady of the Consolation of Cambray, who had lived in Much Woolton, near Liverpool, since the French Revolution. At the age of eleven he went to Gregory's Benedictine College in Acton Burnell near Shrewsbury , Shropshire . On July 15, 1810, he was admitted to the monastery, taking the religious name Bede, in honor of Beda Venerabilis and his uncle. In 1813 he received the minor ordinations from Bishop John Milner of Wolverhampton, on March 4, 1819 he was ordained a priest by Bishop William Poynter at Old Hall College and held the offices of pastor, prefect, novice master and subpriors in succession . In 1819 Polding's cousin, Edward Bede Slater , became Vicar Apostolic of Mauritius .

Sydney

On July 3, 1832, Polding was named titular bishop of Hiero-Caesarea and appointed Vicar Apostolic of New Holland to Van Diemen's Land . On June 29, 1834, the episcopal ordination took place by James Yorke Bramston , Vicar Apostolic of London , with the assistance of Thomas Griffiths , Coadjutor of the Vicar Apostolic of London, and Étienne Jérôme Rouchouze , SSCC , Vicar Apostolic of Eastern Oceans. Polding and his companions reached Hobart on August 6, 1835 and Polding reached Sydney on September 13, 1835. The authorities quickly recognized his influence on the prisoners, so that when each prisoner ship arrived, the Catholics were available for a few days. He and his helpers took care of the prisoners. Polding traveled all over Australia and was considered hardworking. In November 1840 he traveled to Europe. During his absence, he appointed Francis Murphy , later Bishop of Adelaide , as his vicar general .

Polding was named the first bishop of Sydney on April 5, 1842, and Archbishop of Sydney on April 22, 1842. Due to his successful diplomatic mission in Malta, he was appointed Roman Count and Papal Assistant to the Throne .

Despite his many successes as the first bishop of Sydney, as an Englishman he had to struggle against opposition from his largely Irish congregation. British anti-clericalism and the oath of supremacy had caused a deep distrust of the Irish against the English.

He helped establish the University College of St. John, Sydney , and Mary's College, Lyndhurst. Polding travels to Rome again in 1846 in the hope of getting a coadjutor bishop and winning Benedictine women for his diocese. It was successful and a separate diocese was established in Melbourne . In 1857 he founded the Sisters of the Good Samaritan , an Australian religious congregation.

In January 1874 he retired to the Sacred Heart Presbytery in Darlinghurst. He died in Sydney in 1877 and was first buried in Petersham Cemetery and later reburied in St Mary's Cathedral .
