The Archdiocese of Adelaide ( Latin Archidioecesis Adelaidensis , English Archdiocese of Adelaide ) is a Roman Catholic Archdiocese based in Adelaide , Australia .
history
On April 5, 1842 Pope Gregory XVI. the Apostolic Vicariate Adelaide ("Adelaidensis") was founded out of the Vicariate " Neuholland und van Diemens Land " founded in 1834 . On April 22, 1842, the elevation to the diocese of Adelaide took place. In 1845, the Apostolic Vicariate King George Sounde - The Sound was spun off , and two years later it was incorporated again into the Diocese of Adelaide and Perth. On May 10, 1887, Leo XIII. the appointment to the archbishopric, at the same time the spin-off of the diocese Porta Augusta, since 1951 diocese Port Pirie .
The first Catholic churches were built in Adelaide in 1845 and in Morphett Vale in 1846. The first part of the “St. Francis Xavier's Cathedral in Adelaide opened in 1858. The Archdiocese of Adelaide and the Diocese of Port Pirie maintain 104 Catholic schools with around 46,000 pupils (as of 2006).
The diocese was rocked by the publication of a number of child abuse cases by Catholic clerics from 2010 to 2012 . On June 3, 2018 Pope appointed Francis with Gregory O'Kelly an apostolic administrator sede plena , bringing the official duties of the diocesan Bishop Philip Wilson rests. Earlier, on May 22, 2018, Wilson was found guilty by a Newcastle court that believed Wilson prevented a pedophile priest from being held accountable for molesting at least four boys in the 1970s should. On July 3, 2018 Wilson became a one-year prison sentence sentenced without parole. Wilson laid appeal against his conviction and rejected a resignation initially further. On July 30, 2018, Pope Francis accepted Wilson's resignation. On December 6, 2018, Wilson was acquitted in the second instance .
