The Eparchia Saint Thomas in Melbourne ( Latin Eparchia Sancti Thomae Apostoli Melburnensis Syrorum-Malabarensium ) is an eparchy located in Australia of the Syro-Malabar Church with its seat in Melbourne, united with the Roman Catholic Church .

history

Pope Francis established the eparchy with the patronage of the Apostle Thomas and based in Melbourne on January 11, 2014 for the pastoral care of the estimated more than 30,000 Syro-Malabar Christians in Australia. The territory covers the entire Australian continent. Most of the Syro-Malabar Christians in Australia currently live in the area of ​​the dioceses of Brisbane , Canberra , Darwin , Melbourne , Parramatta and Wollongong .

As the first bishop of the eparchy, Pope Francis appointed the previous curia bishop in the Grand Archdiocese of Ernakulam-Angamaly , Bosco Puthur .
