The Archdiocese of Melbourne (Latin Archidioecesis Melburnensis , English Archdiocese of Melbourne ) is a Roman Catholic Archdiocese in Australia with its seat in Melbourne .

The Archdiocese of Melbourne was detached from the Archdiocese of Sydney on June 25, 1847 and established as the Diocese of Melbourne. In 1874 the dioceses of Ballarat and Sandhurst were spun off. On March 31, 1874, the elevation to the archbishopric took place. In 1887 the Diocese of Sale was spun off.

Since 1982, the Saint Peter and Paul Eparchy in Melbourne has been part of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church , which has been led by Bishop Peter Stasiuk since 1992 .

On December 11, 2018, the jury of an Australian court found the former diocesan bishop , Curia Cardinal George Pell , unanimously guilty . The charges are officially unknown; according to media reports, they concern the sexual abuse of minors . Pell is free on bail ; the sentence was announced for February 4, 2019. On December 12, 2018, the Vatican announced that Pope Francis had already released him and two other cardinals from his duties in the Council of Cardinals in October 2018 because of his old age. Regarding the legal process, Vatican spokesman Greg Burke said the Holy See had "the greatest respect for the Australian courts".
