Peter Andrew Comensoli (born March 25, 1964 in Bulli , New South Wales , Australia ) is an Australian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne .

Life

Peter Comensoli was born the fourth son of Mick Comensoli and his wife Margaret and was baptized in St. John Vianney's Church in Fairy Meadow . He attended St. John Vianney's Primary School, run by the Sisters of the Good Samaritan , and St. Paul's College in Bellambi, run by the Marist Fathers . He then worked in banking for four years and studied economics at the University of Wollongong .

Began in 1986, he entered the seminary of St. Patrick's College in Manly and studied Catholic theology and philosophy . In 1989 he obtained a Bachelor of Theology and 1991 a Bachelor of Sacred Theology from the Catholic Institute of Sydney . On 22 May 1992 he received by the Bishop of Wollongong , William Edward Murray , the ordination . Afterwards he was first chaplain in Unanderra and from 1992 to 1995 cathedral vicar at the cathedral of Wollongong as well as hospital chaplain . From 1995 to 1996 he was parish administrator in Shellharbour and from 1997 chaplain in Rosemeadow . In 1998 he was released for postgraduate studies in Rome , where he obtained a licentiate in moral theology at the Pontifical Alfonsian Academy in 2000 . After his return to Australia he was first chaplain in West Wollongong and from 2000 to 2006 Cancellarius Curiae and Notarius Curiae in the Diocese of Wollongong.

In 2006 he was released for further postgraduate studies in Scotland , where he obtained a Master of Letters in Moral Philosophy from the University of Saint Andrews in 2007 . In 2011 he was at the University of Edinburgh in Theological Ethics at Oliver O'Donovan after making a thesis entitled Recognising persons. The profoundly impaired and Christian anthropology to Ph.D. PhD . He then worked as a professor at the Catholic Institute of Sydney .

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on April 20, 2011 titular bishop of Tigisi in Numidia and auxiliary bishop in Sydney . He was ordained episcopal by the Archbishop of Sydney, George Cardinal Pell , on June 8 of the same year in Saint Mary's Cathedral in Sydney; Co- consecrators were Philip Edward Wilson , Archbishop of Adelaide , and Peter William Ingham , Bishop of Wollongong. His motto Praedicamus Christum crucifixum ( We proclaim the crucified Christ ) comes from the 1st Corinthians ( 1 Cor 1.23  EU ).

Comensoli was Vicar General and Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Sydney during the 2014 Sedis vacancy . As Episcopal Vicar , he was responsible for the protection of life, marriage and the family.

Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Broken Bay on November 20, 2014 . The inauguration took place on December 12 of the same year. On June 29, 2018, Pope Francis appointed him Archbishop of Melbourne. The inauguration took place on August 1st of the same year.
