Pontifical Academy Alfonsiana

The Pontifical Academy Alfonsiana ( Italian : Pontificia Accademia Alfonsiana ) is a higher educational institute for moral theology based in Rome . It is located in the Esquilino district in the Redemptorist complex that also includes the Generalate and the Church of Sant'Alfonso .

history

In 1949 the Academy was organized by the religious community founded the Redemptorists. The forerunner was the St. Alfons University, founded in 1855. In 1960 it was incorporated into the Pontifical Lateran University .

The academy was significantly involved in the content work on the Second Vatican Council , in particular on the pastoral constitution Gaudium et Spes .

University

The Accademia Alfonsiana is recognized worldwide as a specialized research institute for moral theology in the sense of Alfonso Maria de Liguori . Over 4,500 students from more than 60 countries have completed a licentiate or doctorate at the academy since it was founded . About 30 professors, mostly members of the Redemptorists, teach at the institute. The President of the Accademia Alfonsiana is Alfonso Amarante CSsR (since 2018). The academy is supported by the “Alfonsiana Foundation” (La Fondazione Alfonsiana).

The academy is the publisher of “Editiones Accademiae Alfonsianae”, a scientific journal for moral theology.

The library, founded in 1855 at St. Alfonso's College , was substantially expanded in 1867 by a donation from the Bishop of La Rochelle, Cardinal Clément Villecourt . As early as 1905, the library was one of the best ecclesiastical libraries in Rome, with over 20,000 volumes.

Well-known professors were among others the Germans Bernhard Häring CSsR and Andreas Resch CSsR; famous students are Fausto Tardelli , Jean Mbarga and Ioan Robu .
