Bernhard Haring
Bernhard Häring CSsR (born November 10, 1912 in Böttingen near Spaichingen , † July 3, 1998 in Haag in Upper Bavaria ) was a Roman Catholic moral theologian and clergyman of the Redemptorist Order .
Life
Bernhard Häring did his doctorate with Theodor Steinbüchel . He was from 1947 to 1951 at the Philosophical-Theological College of the Redemptorists in Gars am Inn and from 1951 to 1987 Professor of Moral Theology at the Theological College of the Redemptorists Accademia Alfonsiana in Rome . He taught as a visiting professor at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, and at Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York . At the Second Vatican Council he was theological advisor and worked on the pastoral constitution Gaudium et spes . Häring founded a biblically oriented, personal moral theology and significantly influenced the further development of this discipline. Ecumenical conversation and dialogue with modern, pluralistic culture increasingly shaped his work.
Häring wrote numerous works on moral theology and issues of the time. He became known worldwide primarily through his two standard works on moral theology, The Law of Christ (1954) and Free in Christ (1979–1981). The Redemptorist library in Gars am Inn, where Häring moved with the majority of his writings in 1988, has a total of around 430 different editions of his works in 17 languages. In the last years of his life he struggled with teaching objection proceedings by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in Rome. Häring died on July 3, 1998 a few days after a stroke in the Haag hospital (Mühldorf am Inn district). His simple grave is in the Gars monastery cemetery.
