Order of Merit of the State of Baden-Württemberg
The Order of Merit of the State of Baden-Württemberg is the highest award in the State of Baden-Württemberg . According to the announcement of the foundation by the Prime Minister, it is awarded for achievements "which serve the common good in particular in the political, social, cultural and economic areas".
history
This award was created under the name Medal of Merit on November 26, 1974 when the Prime Minister announced the foundation of the Medal of Merit of the State of Baden-Württemberg .
A new foundation statute was issued on June 26, 2009 and the award of the Medal of Merit of the State of Baden-Württemberg was renamed the Order of Merit of the State of Baden-Württemberg .
A further change in the foundation announcement on February 3, 2016 fundamentally changed the design of the order. The State Ministry of Baden-Württemberg decided in favor of a design from the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart from several drafts . Since then, the Order of Merit is no longer awarded as a medal, but in the form of a stylized cross. The first award of the Order of Merit in the new design took place on April 23, 2016 in the Ludwigsburg residential palace .

In the original design, which was awarded until 2016, the Order of Merit was a gold-colored medal. On the front the order showed the great coat of arms and the inscription BADEN-WÜRTTEMBERG , on the back a stylized laurel branch and the inscription FOR MERIT. It was worn on a longitudinally striped ribbon with the national colors black and yellow or gold on the upper left side of the chest.
Since the change in the foundation's announcement on February 3, 2016, the Order of Merit has been a gold-colored stylized cross with a medallion in the middle, on which the large state coat of arms and the lettering BADEN-WÜRTTEMBERG is depicted. The Order of Merit is worn on a folded ribbon in the national colors on the upper left side of the chest, which is rather untypical for German orders and decorations. Instead of the original size of the medal, the order of merit can also be worn as an order miniature or as a rosette in the national colors.
Award
The Prime Minister awards the Order of Merit . An award can be suggested to the mayor's offices and district offices or directly to the prime minister. The members of the state government are entitled to make nominations for their respective business area and the president of the state parliament for the members and employees of the state parliament. The Prime Minister decides on the application after hearing the Council of Ministers.
According to the foundation's announcement, the number of living bearers of the Order of Merit is limited to 1000 people. Since 1975 the medal has been awarded a total of 1,860 times.
