Live and act

After visiting the Humanistic Gymnasium in Gunzburg and in Forchheim joined Otto Weiss in 1954 in the novitiate of the Redemptorists in Gars am Inn ( Gars Abbey on). From 1955 he studied philosophy, theology and history at the philosophical-theological college of the Redemptorists in Gars. In 1960 he was ordained a priest during the World Eucharistic Congress in Munich and then worked in the order as a journalist and educator. From 1965 he studied Bavarian history, medieval studies and moral theology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and received his doctorate in 1976 from Karl Bosl with a dissertation on the history of the Redemptorists in Bavaria (1790–1909). Weiß achieved his laicisation in 1971 and married. From 1971 to 1981 he worked intermittently as a religion teacher in Munich and at the same time as a freelancer for Bavarian Broadcasting (until 1979). From 1977 to 1979 he also held a teaching position in intellectual history at the University of Philosophy in Munich. He then worked from 1981 to 1986 as a research assistant at the German Historical Institute (DHI) in Rome.

There, Weiss had been a member of the Historical Institute of the Redemptorists in Rome since 1987 and was also editor of the Spicilegium Historicum Congregationis SSmi Redemptoris magazine until 1999 . Since 2004 he has served as the coordinator and editor of the multi-volume history of the Redemptorist Congregation . In 2009 he was named a Redemptorist Oblate.

Weiß lived in Vienna and Grafing near Munich , most recently in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, and was the author of numerous publications on the German-Italian history of perception and Catholicism in the 19th and 20th centuries. In particular, he dealt with figures from the Redemptorist Order ( Clemens Maria Hofbauer , Kaspar Stanggassinger ), Catholic Romanticism and Ultramontanism (especially the question of mysticism in this context: Louise Beck ) as well as with the modernism crisis and cultural Catholicism ( Carl Muth ). He wrote numerous articles in the Biographical-Bibliographical Church Lexicon (BBKL).
