The German Historical Institute in Rome ( Istituto Storico Germanico di Roma ), founded in 1888, is the oldest of the historical foreign institutes in Germany . It is used to research Italian and German history , especially German-Italian relations in an international context from the early Middle Ages to the recent past. The DHI Rome has been part of the Max Weber Foundation - German Humanities Institutes Abroad (MWS), based in Bonn , since 2002 . The MWS is financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
Institute
The German Historical Institute (DHI) in Rome was founded as the Prussian Historical Station after the opening of the Vatican Archives in 1888 . It conducts basic historical research , promotes young scientists and sees itself as a service facility . The DHI supports German scientists and institutions in their research and promotes cooperation between German, Italian and international historians.
In 1960 the institute was expanded to include a music history department, whose field of activity is the relationship between German and Italian music, its historical requirements and its effects on Europe.
The guests, scholarship holders and academic members of the institute traditionally work in the Vatican Archives , the Vatican Library , but since the 1960s also increasingly in the other church and especially state archives and libraries in Rome. The director is supported by a scientific advisory board.
Projects
The institute regularly organizes scientific conferences, colloquia and lectures on topics from Italian history and music history as well as German-Italian relations. It awards scholarships for the training of young academics in the field of history and music history. The grants are awarded for a period of several months, depending on the research project, and are primarily aimed at doctoral students . A one-year guest professorship is aimed at scientists from Germany who have completed their habilitation . Every year, the DHI awards several six-week internships to advanced students of history and music history whose studies focus on German-Italian relations or Italian history. A ten-day course is held annually for advanced students and doctoral candidates in history. This so-called Rome course provides an insight into the history and monuments of Rome on the basis of selected topics.
