History and society. Zeitschrift für Historische Sozialwissenschaft is the title of a historical journal (citation GG ). It has been published four times a year since 1975. It was once the mouthpiece of the so-called Bielefelder Schule (the science of history). The profile of the magazine is no longer classical social history, but corresponds to an analytical historiography, the interpretations of which point beyond the examined subject.

Structure and characteristics

It differs from other well-known journals such as the Historisches Zeitschrift (HZ) in the way it focuses on the modern era and particularly in the 19th and 20th centuries. There are certainly topics from the area of the early modern period , but almost none from medieval or even ancient history . Biographical or, in the traditional sense, political-historical approaches (in the sense of acts of “great individuals”) are also sought in vain. Instead, structural- historical approaches characterize the picture in the broadest sense . This includes the investigation of social groups ( workers , nobility or bourgeoisie ) but also economic and social processes. In the sense of a historical social science , these were initially based on contemporary sociology and political science . Later on, the spectrum was significantly expanded to include newer cultural-historical approaches . From a statistical point of view, the comparison of the first years 1–5 (1975–1979) and the years 21–25 (1995–1999) has not changed too much. Issues dealing with political rule made up 44% in the early years and 43% in the 1990s. For the economic processes it was 14.6% to 14.8%, questions about social change were considered at 14.6% and 12.1% respectively. In the broadest sense, questions of cultural order were dealt with by 26.6% and 29.7%, respectively.

In this respect, the journal is also a reflection of the development of historical science in recent decades. This is all the more true since history and society have always given a large amount of space to the theoretical debate and self-reflection of the guild (for example through its own themed booklets). A discussion forum that was increasingly devoted to certain controversial concepts (e.g. everyday history , proto-industrialization , wage policy during the Weimar Republic ) contributed to this.

Another peculiarity is that the vast majority of the editions contain essays on a specific main topic. This makes it possible either to illuminate a problem from different angles or to represent different facets. The aim of a comparative approach and a look beyond the “German horizon” goes back to the concepts of the Bielefelder Schule . The comparison of developments in different countries should reveal similarities and national characteristics.

History and Society also differs from the older scientific journals in the lack of brief advertisements for newly published literature. Instead, detailed literature and research reports and collective reviews attempt to outline the current state of research on a topic.

The journal is published by a committee of currently 20 editors. Hans-Ulrich Wehler has played the leading role since the company was founded until recently . In addition to him, the executive editors of the first edition in 1975 were: Wolfgang J. Mommsen and Hans-Jürgen Puhle . Currently (2015) the management is with Christoph Conrad, Ute Frevert and Paul Nolte .
