Hans-Jürgen Puhle

Hans-Jürgen Puhle (born October 8, 1940 in Neumarkt , Lower Silesia Province ) is a German historian and political scientist .

From 1960 to 1965 Hans-Jürgen Puhle studied history, political science, sociology and philosophy in Tübingen , Marburg and at the Free University of Berlin . In 1965 he received his doctorate in Berlin with the work of Agrarian Interest Policy and Prussian Conservatism in the Wilhelmine Empire , supervised by Gerhard A. Ritter . He was then director of the Latin American Social Research Institute (ILDIS) in Santiago de Chile from 1966 to 1968 . Puhle worked as a research assistant at the University of Münster from 1968 to 1973. It was there that he completed his habilitation in 1973. From 1973 to 1978 Puhle taught first as a lecturer and from 1976 as professor for modern history and political science at the University of Münster. From 1978 to 1990 he was Professor of General History at Bielefeld University . From 1990 until his retirement in 2009 he taught as a professor of political science at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . There he was Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences from 1999 to 2000 and again from 2006 to 2007.

Puhle was visiting professor at the Universidad de Chile in Santiago (1966–68), Cornell University (1976/77), Stanford University (1986/87), University of Tel Aviv (1988), FLACSO Buenos Aires (1991), Harvard, among others University (2009/10), Universitat Pompeu Fabra (2012). He was also a John F. Kennedy Memorial Fellow at Harvard University (1970/71) and Leverhulme Fellow at Oxford University (1982).

His main research interests are modern European, North and Latin American social and political history, the history of political systems, parties and associations, democratization, the welfare state, nationalism and populism. From 1975 to 2011 he was co-editor of the magazine Geschichte und Gesellschaft and from 2000 to 2006 he was co-editor of the magazine Iberoamericana . He is co-editor of the book series North American Studies and Edition Weltregionen and is still a member of the scientific advisory board of the Bertelsmann Transformation Index .
