The Universidad de Chile ( German : University of Chile ), based in Santiago de Chile, is the largest university in Chile and one of the oldest in America .
history
The roots of the universities go back to the year 1622, when the first university in Chile was founded on August 19th under the name Santo Tomás de Aquino . On 28 July 1738 was in honor of King Philip V of Spain in Real Universidad de San Felipe renamed. It is popularly known as Casa de Bello (Spanish: Bello's house - after its first rector , Andrés Bello ).
On April 17, 1839, after Chile had gained independence from the motherland, the Kingdom of Spain , the university became the Universidad de Chile , and opened on November 19, 1842. During this time five faculties were established:
- Anthropology and philosophy
- mathematical sciences and physics
- Law and Political Science
- medicine
- Theology .
In 1931 it became six faculties:
- Philosophy and Education
- Law and Social Sciences
- Biology and medicine,
- Physics and Mathematical Sciences
- Agricultural Economics and Veterinary Medicine
- Art studies .
The faculties became later
added, as well as the following institutes:
- Institute for Public Affairs
- Institute for International Studies
- Institute for Communication and Image Science
- Institute of Nutrition and Food Technology
The university runs numerous nationwide projects, for example:
- The national sky observatory since 1852
- Research activities in the Antarctic since 1940
- seismological investigations, especially volcanic activity since 1908
- Chile's symphony orchestra since 1941
- Chile's national ballet since 1945
- Center for Byzantine , Neo-Hellenic , Arabic and Judaic Studies
- Chile's nic .
