Klaus Tenfelde

Klaus Tenfelde (born March 29, 1944 in Erkelenz ; † July 1, 2011 in Bochum ) was a German historian , professor of social history and social movements and until March 31, 2011 director of the Institute for Social Movements at the Ruhr University Bochum .

Live and act

Klaus Tenfelde - son of a civil engineering worker - completed an apprenticeship at the Essen-Rossenray mines from 1958 to 1961 . He then worked as a squire for a year ; after that he worked for three years as a police enforcement officer in the federal border police .

After Tenfelde had made up his Abitur at the Braunschweig-Kolleg in 1967 , he studied history and German at the University of Münster until 1973 . As early as 1975, Klaus Tenfelde received his doctorate from Gerhard A. Ritter with his dissertation on the social history of miners in the Ruhr in the 19th century . In 1981 he received the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize for Young Scientists.

Until 1985 he worked as a research assistant at the University of Munich . Tenfelde completed his habilitation there in 1981 with a thesis on the subject of the Proletarian Province. Radicalism and resistance in Penzberg / Upper Bavaria 1900 to 1945 . He received the Venia legendi for history. In 1985 he moved to the University of Innsbruck , where he took over a chair for economic and social history . In 1990 he went to Bielefeld University . Tenfelde was awarded the Fritz Thyssen Foundation Prize in 1994 . A year later, Klaus Tenfelde was able to take over the chair for social history and social movements at the Ruhr University in Bochum . In November of the same year he also became head of the Institute for Research into the European Labor Movement (IGA, since 1999 Institute for Social Movements , ISB) founded at the Ruhr University in the 1970s .

Tenfelde was considered an expert on the history of the Ruhr area and work or the labor movement . He was committed to the development of the Ruhr area into an urban “Ruhrstadt”. The Ruhr Area Library Foundation , which he initiated, has existed in the House of the History of the Ruhr Area in Bochum since 1998 . In 1999 Tenfelde was elected a full member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia .

In 2007 Tenfelde took over the publication of the handbook History of German Mining , the volumes of which appeared from 2012 to 2016.

Tenfelde was married to the doctor Ellen Tenfelde. The marriage has two children.
