The Braunschweig-Kolleg has been an institute of the state of Lower Saxony since 1949 for adult education to obtain the general university entrance qualification or the technical college entrance qualification , which the students can achieve in two to three and a half years depending on the requirements.

history

It was founded in Braunschweig in 1949 with 4 full-time teachers and 50 students and is the oldest school of its kind in Germany. In 1959, the college took over the premises of the Academy for Youth Leadership of the Hitler Youth , which had been built between 1937 and 1939. In 1981 the training was adapted to the grammar school course system. Up until 2001 it shared the building with the German Milling School , and since then with the Braunschweig Evening High School .

education

The college encompasses grades 11 to 13 and has almost 350 students. Lessons take place around 30 hours a week during the day. A dormitory with 45 places is attached to the college, which it shares with the evening grammar school.

The conditions to visit are the main or high-school diploma and a vocational training or a minimum of three years' work experience or recognized equivalent periods, the running a household is equated with at least three people in the profession. A further requirement for admission is a minimum age of 19 years.

The training of this second educational path is divided into a one-year introductory phase and a two-year qualification phase. In a six-month preparatory course, those who do not have a lower secondary qualification can gain access to the introductory phase. The registration deadline for applications is January 15th, the admission date is the first day of school after the summer holidays.

The training is free, but the learning aids are no longer borne by the state of Lower Saxony, as the freedom to learn aids has been abolished. Students can apply for BAföG support regardless of their parents . The Lower Saxony Office for Education Funding is responsible.
