The evening grammar school in Braunschweig

As an institution of the state of Lower Saxony, the evening grammar school Braunschweig is an institute for adult education to obtain the general higher education entrance qualification or the technical college entrance qualification , which the students can achieve in two to three and a half years depending on the requirements. The catchment area from which the students come extends beyond Braunschweig to Peine, Gifhorn, Wolfsburg, Helmstedt, Wolfenbüttel, Goslar and Salzgitter.

history

The evening grammar school was set up in Braunschweig in 1949 as an evening school for former combatants at the then girls’s grammar school (later grammar school) Kleine Burg . The number of participants naturally decreased as the Second World War grew longer, in 1953 so rapidly that a closure was already being considered in view of the simultaneous lack of teachers. However, thanks to the initiative of the then head of the municipal secondary school for girls, Oberstudiendirektor Erich Heckenhausen, and with the support of the city of Braunschweig, it was possible to integrate the evening secondary school as a special feature of the municipal secondary school for girls and thus to open them up to working people in general.

At the beginning of the 1968/69 school year, the "Evening High School Braunschweig" was organisationally separated from the Kleine Burg girls' high school through the establishment of a school management with an independent teaching staff, and in 1974 it was anchored as a school type in the Lower Saxony School Act. In the 1970s, large parts of the student body and the teaching staff saw a reform of the upper school as desirable. The aim was to adopt the course system that had been in place at grammar schools for several years for the first time across Germany for an evening grammar school. Until then it was considered very doubtful whether a form of organization like the course system could work at all in such small schools as evening grammar schools are compared to “normal” grammar schools. The Braunschweig Evening High School then received approval for a three-year pilot project for the "introduction of the course system at the Braunschweig Evening High School" with special examination regulations. This began in the 1979/80 school year and, after successful completion, led to a change in the ordinance and a nationwide introduction of the course system at evening grammar schools as well.

In 2001 the evening grammar school moved into the premises of the former academy for youth leadership and has since shared it with the Braunschweig-Kolleg . Since then, both schools have been closely linked. There is a joint headmaster, who is subordinate to a permanent representative of the headmaster at the evening grammar school and college. Furthermore, many teachers are active at both schools and there are joint school activities between the students.

education

In contrast to the day school, the lessons are tailored to the professional activity and the special learning conditions of adults; it takes place in the evening and comprises around 22 hours per week. The evening grammar school includes grades 11 to 13 and has almost 150 students. A dormitory with 45 places is attached to the evening grammar school, which it shares with the college.

The conditions to visit are the main or high-school diploma and a vocational training or a minimum of three years' work experience or recognized equivalent periods, the running a household is equated with at least three people in the profession. A further requirement for admission is a minimum age of 19 years.

The training of this second educational path is divided into a one-year introductory phase and a two-year qualification phase. In a six-month preparatory course, those who do not have a lower secondary qualification can gain access to the introductory phase. The registration deadline for applications is January 15th, the admission date is the first day of school after the summer holidays.

The training is free, but the learning aids are no longer borne by the state of Lower Saxony, as the freedom to learn aids has been abolished. Students can apply for BAföG support regardless of their parents . The Lower Saxony Office for Education Funding is responsible.

Since the 2017/18 school year, the evening grammar school has been offering a lesson variant with online options in parallel to regular lessons in order to support the compatibility of work, family and school.
