Günther Kaiser

Günther Kaiser (born December 27, 1928 in Walkenried ; † September 3, 2007 in Emmendingen ) was a German legal scholar and criminologist .

Life

Günther Kaiser learned the mason trade after graduating from school and worked as a journeyman mason for several years. From 1949 he attended the Braunschweig College , where he passed his Abitur in 1951. After a general studies (1951-1952) studied at the Imperial in Tübingen University of Tübingen and the University of Goettingen jurisprudence . Then he was prosecutor and judge. In 1962 he received his doctorate from the University of Tübingen and began a university career. In 1969 he completed his habilitation (also in Tübingen) in criminology and criminal law . One year later he became head of the criminological research group at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law in Freiburg / Brsg. and also professor for criminology and criminal law at the University of Freiburg . In 1973 he became director at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law. From 1982 to 1996 Kaiser also taught at the University of Zurich . He retired in December 1996 .

Kaiser's main research interests were: criminology , juvenile criminal law , the penal system and criminal policy , and the history of crime . His criminology textbooks were and are widely used in teaching.

From 1979 to 1998 he was a German member of the Council of Europe Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment .

Honors

Kaiser was an honorary doctor of the Universities of Miskolc / Hungary and Wrocław / Poland (1991), the Basque University of San Sebastián / Spain (1992) and the Asia University of Tokyo and the Panteion University of Athens (1996). In 1999 he was awarded the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany . In 2003 he was honored with the Beccaria Gold Medal of the New Criminological Society .
