The Pontificia Accademia Romana di Archeologia (German Roman Pontifical Academy of Archeology ) is a Pontifical Academy based in Rome .

history

The forerunner of the academy was the Accademia delle Romane Antichità founded by Pope Benedict XIV in 1740, which was based on the Accademia Romana of Julius Pomponius Laetus in the 15th century.

The Papal Academy of Archeology was founded in 1810 by Pope Pius VII as the Accademia Romana di Archeologia . After an interim dissolution, a re-establishment took place in 1816. In 1829 Pope Pius VIII received papal recognition as the Pontificia Accademia Romana di Archeologia . The purpose of the academy is to promote research from classical antiquity to prehistory and the Renaissance .

The academy consists of up to 140 members, including 20 honorary members, 40 effective members and 80 corresponding members.

The president is appointed by the Pope. One of the tasks of the President is to ensure communication with the Pontifical Council for Culture and the Pontifical Academies, and to organize the annual meeting of the Pontifical Academies. He is automatically a member of the Council for the Coordination of the Pontifical Academies.
