The Polska Akademia Nauk Stacja Naukowa w Rzymie ( Italian Accademia Polacca delle Scienze - Biblioteca e Centro di Studi a Roma , "Polish Academy of Sciences - Scientific Branch Rome") is a Polish research institution based in Rome . The institution, founded in 1927, is one of seven foreign institutions of the Polish Academy of Sciences .

The Rome branch emerged from a cooperation between the Polish Academy of Sciences and Arts and the Archdiocese of Krakow . Initially, twelve rooms were rented in a former hospice near the Polish national church of San Stanislao alle Botteghe Oscure on Via delle Botteghe Oscure. Efforts have been made since 1886 with the first Polish Expeditio Romana to offer Polish researchers in Rome a point of contact and a center for their studies. But it was not until 1921 that the historian and legal scholar Józef Graf Michałowski, who lived in Rome, donated an extensive collection of books to the Polish Academy, which led to the renting of appropriate rooms to accommodate this stock of books. Józef Michałowski managed the library from 1927 to 1946 and was the director of the facility. In 1938 the institute moved into new premises in one of the Palazzi Doria-Pamphilj near Piazza Venezia in Vicolo Doria 2, where it is still located today.

The Second World War brought the Institute's activities to a standstill and the library was moved to the Vatican Library to save it from destruction. After the end of the war, for financial reasons, the library was under the protection and administration of the British Finance Commission for Polish Affairs, but was returned to Polish administration in 1946. After the dissolution of the Polish Academy of Sciences and Arts, it was subordinated to the Polish Academy of Sciences, founded in 1952. In 1962 she became a member of the Unione internazionale degli istituti di archeologia, storia e storia dell'arte in Roma and, together with its director, Krztsztof Żaboklicki, was its president in 1997–1999 and 1999–2001.

The branch's tasks include developing scientific cooperation between Poland and Italy. Its purpose is to maintain and promote scientific and personal contacts with Italian scientists who are members of the Polish Academy. It offers organizational support to Polish scientists living in Italy for their research projects. In addition, she maintains contacts with international research institutions and organizations in Italy. In particular for the areas of historical and archaeological research, it should carry out its own investigations.

In 1956 the first volume of the Conferenze series was published , in which the results of the conferences organized by the Polish side on specific topics are published. With the Atti dell'Accademia Polacca , the branch has been publishing a series of publications since 2012 , in which lectures are published that were held at regular readings in the branch. Most of the publications are available online as PDF.
