Carlo Pietrangeli

Carlo Pietrangeli (born October 20, 1912 in Rome ; died June 23, 1995 there ) was an Italian classical archaeologist and art historian . From 1978 to 1995 he was Director General of the Vatican Museums , Monuments and Collections.

Carlo Pietrangeli was in 1934 Giulio Giglioli at the La Sapienza University with a thesis on ancient topography laureiert . He then worked as an assistant at the Chair of Restoration at the Faculty of Architecture. He was also part of Giglioli's staff in the preparation of the Mostra Augustea della Romanità , which opened in 1937 , the exhibition to celebrate the 2000th birthday of Augustus , the first Roman emperor. In 1938 he joined the antiquities administration of the city of Rome as an inspector, where he was employed until his retirement in 1977. At the beginning of the 1950s he became director of the Museo di Roma , whose move to the Palazzo Braschi he organized. At the end of the 1950s he was director of the Capitoline Museums and subsequently rose to head of Rome's Antiquities Administration. From 1955 he also taught ancient topography as a private lecturer at La Sapienza University.

After his retirement, Pope John Paul I appointed him General Director of the Vatican Monuments, Museums and Galleries in 1978. He rearranged the important holdings of Egyptian , Etruscan , Greek and Roman art as well as the collections of modern art from the Renaissance to the modern . He also had museums and monuments under his administration restored extensively. Above all, however, the ceiling frescoes in the Sistine Chapel and in the early 1990s the frescoes in the Papal Chapel Sancta Sanctorum of the Lateran Basilica were restored under his responsibility .

Pietrangeli has authored over 500 articles and scientific works. As the successor to Carlo Galassi Paluzzi , he led the series Chiese di Roma illustrate , as well as the Guide Rionali di Roma . For many years he was also editor of the monthly magazine of the city of Rome Capitolium . He was a member of the Pontificia Accademia Romana di Archeologia , of which he was president from 1974 to 1983 and from 1991 to 1995, honorary member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences from 1982, also a member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei from 1983. In 1990 he received the Cultori di Prize Roma of the Istituto nazionale di studi romani , of which he was also a member.
